Tale
Brilliant but emotionally reserved Caro Drake arrives at Oxford with one goal in mind—to earn her doctorate, but through a tempestuous friendship with a charming young man, she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love. Carolyn Weber, author of the book on which the film is based, was in attendance along with actress Rose Reid, who played Caro Drake in the film, and other members of the production.
I knew nothing about the film or the book—I was invited by friends
Christmas Eve in My Hometown Written by Stanley William Zabka and Donald Upton Performed by Eddie Fisher (1951 recording). A gripping film about the intellectual, emotional, philosophical, and spiritual growth and change of an American postgraduate student while studying at Oxford.
I think the film could have benefited from some additional short scenes of admiring the beauty of the Anglican churches, the choral music and also Carolyn’s moments of introspection
The Oxford setting is great, the lead roles are engaging for Rose Reid and Ruari O’Connor and it was great to see British actors like Phyllis Logan, Simon Callow and Ed Stoppard in supporting roles. The film is clearly classed as a Christian film but we didn’t feel it was very religious – in fact the film deals with universal themes of community, connection and purpose.
Surprised by Oxford it deserves a regular cinema screening and more/more targeted advertising
We are regular viewers – and are amazed that there was no advertising for this film and that it apparently only ran for two days.
