In 1985, devoted father Bill Furlong uncovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent and discovers shocking truths himself. Cillian Murphy is a fan of the film’s original novel author, Claire Keegan. He recalls reading her novel “Foster” on a train and having to pull his hoodie over his face because he was crying. Dedicated to the more than 56,000 young women who were sent to Magdalen institutions for “penance and rehabilitation” between 1922 and 1998. And the children who were taken from them. Featured in 60 Minutes: Crisis in the Red Sea/Fake Electors/Finding Cillian Murphy (2024). My eyes were glued to the screen from start to finish watching this film. The amount of scenes without dialogue that have so much atmosphere and emotion is just incredible. Cillian Murphy is absolutely amazing in this movie, as I expected. But the emotion he shows in this movie and the way he acts through his body language and facial expressions is just superb. He is truly one of the best actors of this generation. Emily Watson is amazing as the Mother Superior. The tension she brings to each scene is fantastic. It really shows how horrible some nuns were during this time. This movie had a perfect running time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. It even felt longer to me because I was so immersed. The music and cinematography were both so simple, yet so effective. They both really added a lot to the movie and just gave it that finishing touch it needed. Overall, this movie was absolutely amazing and it was a very enjoyable watch. I would love to see more movies like this in the future. It was also great to learn more about my country’s history, even if it’s the darker side. “If you want to succeed in life, there are some things you have to ignore in order to continue.” Eileen Furlong.
