A modern-day story about finding fortune in the world of West Texas oil rigs
Watch writer/director Taylor Sheridan’s most popular movies and TV series on IMDb, sorted by user rating. A landowner, at least one involved in the oil industry, acts as an intermediary between the exploration companies and the landowners. Typically, a landowner’s job is to negotiate and enter into contracts with landowners with mineral rights to lease those rights to the company they represent.

Essentially, they manage the land and secure the leases so they can drill for oil and gas. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, housing for workers (man camps), assemble excavation equipment, and drill the well itself, especially in remote locations. They are also, in part, problem solvers, troubleshooters, and facilitators.
I’m sure you’ll figure out which one!
Landman is my first Taylor Sheridan series, so I don’t have the expectations one would seem to have as a Yellowstone fan. The main story so far is interesting and engaging without being too over the top. There are a few subplots that develop well as the episodes go on, but perhaps one of them detracts from the overall quality of the series.
The actors portray their characters well
The visual production is remarkable; the direction and design of the environments is meant to be enjoyable. It would be interesting to hear what people who work in the industry think about the realism of the field scenes. Billy Bob Thornton is exemplary and directs the program really well.
