This is highlighted several times in this film with scenes where the principals – wife, husband, son, etc
Tale
A repressed matriarch and unfortunately overwhelming circumstances – a worrying earthquake, crushing debt, a dying ex-husband, a raging coworker and his son’s girlfriend – who push her to the brink… The title "Hamon" is a common Japanese word, literally meaning “ripple” and metaphorically the effects we each have on others.
Or any living organism, really
– stand in a shallow pond, and the waves emanating from one character expand in the usual circular pattern to reach the others. An interesting enough visualization of human relationships, but nothing that couldn’t be applied to any film involving people.
Among other events
The arc of the film traces the trials of a Japanese housewife dealing with the sudden disappearance of her husband, the death of her husband’s father, and the dam. sending her only child’s son to college and then a career as far as she can travel without leaving Japan (well, except for Okinawa), and then the reappearance of said prodigal son husband.
I thought it was worth watching even before the final scene, which was surprising, arousing, refreshing, actually quite wonderful
There’s a fair amount of humor, a fair amount of bataan, some awkward scenes with a deaf fiancé that the son brings home unannounced. Be!
