Tale
In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, has revealed that the Stranger Things season 4 remix of Journey’s smash 80s hit Separa Ways (Worlds Apart) was done pretty much the way he originally wanted it back in the 80s, but lacked the technology. Perry was so impressed that he even helped with the development of the remix.
Once: Friends Don’t Lie
one person is talking/transmitting and another person transmits to interrupt them, and then the other person hears this interruption and stops transmitting. This was done multiple times on kids’ CB radios and radios used by police. Those radios, the CB and police radios from the time of the show, don’t work like that.

ET, Poltergeist, that sort of thing
There’s no reason, story-wise, for Stranger Things to take place in the 1980s. But the 1980s atmosphere (the telephones, the chain-smokers, Winona Ryder) are all there to clue you in to this film’s inspiration, which is pretty much every kid-centric 1980s supernatural movie. What’s wonderful is how on-point this tribute is.
It doesn’t have the elevated style of the Spielberg films, which are a major influence, but it does have likability
It’s not just the clothes and the hair, but the acting style, the approach to the script, the structure, everything stays true to its inspiration. You’ve got the young nerds, the horny, insecure teenagers, the monster, the mysterious one with the power, the bad science/government people, the conflicted researcher, the tearful mother – just a pastiche made out of recycled elements, and I don’t disagree, but it really feels less like a rip-off and more like something from that era, like the writers fell into a coma in 1985, woke up, and got to work. The story is consistently engaging and funny, the acting is excellent, and the film has enough laughs and tears to satisfy.
