Anora, a young prostitute from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries the son of an oligarch. Once word reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as her parents head to New York to get their marriage annulled. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker would play out different sexual positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to demonstrate to the actors what he wanted them to do.. In a Las Vegas scene, a character refers to “McCarran Airport.” Although Las Vegas International Airport was known as McCarran International Airport for many decades, its name was changed to Harry Reid International Airport in late 2021.. Her life changes dramatically when they marry
Mikey Madison is miraculous as the young woman whose fairytale dream comes true. But unlike Elizabeth Taylor in “Butterfield 8” or Elisabeth Shue in “Leaving Las Vegas,” the female lead here never becomes the typical prostitute with a heart of gold. She remains tough as nails, full of rage and ready to throw the next punch until the very end. While she never becomes a palatable person, her resolve never wavers. She knows how to assert herself and she furiously pushes away those who fail to do so.
Many have called it part comedy
It’s one of the best performances of the year. Just when you think you know where it’s going, it turns your expectations on their head and reveals itself to be a much more challenging film with a sobering reality at its core. In all honesty, it’s a bit much, despite its dark sense of humor. Fair warning, this film is quite taxing on the psyche. You may be exhausted by the end.
But it’s a memorable film that will leave you speechless
