David Kaplan: Yeah
Misfit cousins reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their beloved grandmother, but their old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the location is where Jesse Eisenberg’s real-life 39-year-old ancestors settled in the diaspora. Benji Kaplan: We stay moving, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor’s gonna come, we get tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom.
Benji Kaplan: Yeah
Benji Kaplan: He gets to the back of the train, starts moving toward the front, looking for stragglers. David Kaplan: Sorry, are we the stragglers? By the time he gets to the front, the train will be in the station and we’re free to go home. David Kaplan: That’s so stupid. Tickets are probably like twelve dollars.
This is our country
Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle of the thing. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap… Featured on CBS News Sunday Morning: Episode #46.44 (2024).
I saw this at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival
12 Studies, Op. 25, No. 3 in F major Written by Frederic Chopin Performed by Tzvi Erez. Jesse Eisenberg previously did “When You Finish Saving the World”; which was interesting but unfortunately a bit annoying. Here, Eisenberg’s direction and writing for this film show that he has improved massively, as many of the characters are interesting and engaging, good conversations in the dialogue, and great performances, especially from Kieran Culkin, who steals the show throughout the film.
There were a few soundtrack choices that felt a little out of place
The narrative explores family history and complicated connections, as each of the themes and explorations into the subject were handled well and were fun, moving, and compelling to watch. Featuring beautiful camera work, a great soundtrack, and conversations that felt real, authentic, and engaging to watch. Eisenberg’s approach to chemistry, structure, and pacing was good as it created a very good, compelling, and personal story about family history and the true meanings of connections and relationships. But overall, Eisenberg has improved, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else he can bring to the present day.
